Sharyn November . . . finally

I’m at CONvergence in MN. In case you didn’t get the memo, I’m NOT at Polaris in TO, really sorry to the people who were hoping to see me there (Evie, Erika, Lucy). Things didn’t work out and so I had to plan my trip. I’m not on display here, just attending as a patron and that gives me time to go to panels and sing a longs!

Last night I attended a panel loosely titled “Writing for YA v.s. Adults” and the panel was very interesting. Lead by S.N. Arly, Kathy Sullivan, Dana Baird, Haddayr Copley-Woods and Sharyn November.

If you’re new to the blog, I was meant to meet Sharyn in 2010 at a UND conference, but she wasn’t able to attend. She attempted a second time in 2011, and again was unable to attend. So I’m happy that I’m finally crossing paths. She came into the panel about halfway through, but is an absolute wealth of knowledge.

I may or may not have laughed the loudest when Haddayr suggested Charlaine Harris instead of Twilight, but that’s because I’m a huge fan of True Blood, the tv show based on Charlaine Harris’ vampire books. The truth is, the two are just so different that it made me laugh– really loud.

The night ended out with Dr. Horrbile’s Sing Along Blog, which was something I couldn’t miss exposing Amy to. It was her first time seeing it, in a crowded auditorium of people singing. It was very cool.

Today there are more panels, I get to meet Tamora Pierce, and will attend more panels run by both her and Sharyn.

I hope you’re having a fun weekend and if not, feel free to tell me your favorite Tamora Pierce book!

I can understand why you laughed — if they were talking about YA books, Charlaine Harris' series isn't YA; of course they're different! (And they are). I do wish though that people would stop comparing things to Twilight. I guess I don't know the context of the comment in general, but I think Twilight as a publishing phenom isn't exactly cutting edge discussion in 2012. Maybe

Re: the Charlaine Harris thing. The panel was for YA v.s. Adult writing style and a Dad asked what to give his daughter to get her OUT of Twilight and more into Adult books. The author's answer was Charlaine Harris. So yeah it was a perfectly reasonable answer, it just made me laugh because Meyer and Harris are SO different.

Anyway it was fun, I have to write another post about
