This idea came to me when my daughter was telling me how much she loves Sailor Moon. And I am going to cheat a little bit because some of my favorite couples were media characters and then book characters, but I figure if they’re in print too, whether it’s novels, graphic novels, manga or comic books, I’m game.
# 10 Romeo + Juliet
By far one of the greatest love stories ever told. I enjoy these two because of the naive instant love, the dangers, and obviously the tragic ending. I’m a tragedy kind of girl.
# 9 Katniss + Peeta
Yep, apologies on my obsession with the Hunger Games, but this was another dynamic couple that taught us a lot about love and life, even if only one of the characters was in love with the other one. I still find this relationship powerful.
# 8 Arwen + Aragorn
From The Lord of the Rings obviously. This was a relationship that was overshadowed by other things going on in the book but in case you missed it, basically, they meet, fall in love, but then he has to leave because he’s human. Arwen then chooses to become human to be with him, giving up her elven immortality. In the end she gives him the sword that allows him to awaken the undead army and rise up as the King. And then of course they get married and live happily ever after.
# 7 Darien + Serena
So yeah she’s a meatball head, but he likes her anyway and when they fight together as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask they make a great team. Then Darien begins having dreams about marrying Serena and her dying after the wedding and so he stays away from her. They both have memories of their time together on the moon, and by the end of the series they’re actually together as boyfriend and girlfriend. I don’t remember a wedding, but I always hoped one would happen.
# 6 Nora + Patch
From Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush Hush series, this is an unlikely couple. Patch is sort of an angel, but he’s a bad boy angel and Nora is a nephilim, but it’s complicated. At first he’s supposed to kill her, but then he falls for her, and in the second one he won’t admit he loves her because if he admits it the other angels will gang up on him. Still, his struggle is really intense, and Nora’s confusion is equally pleasing. It makes them this sort of awkward couple and allows for a lot of steamy suggestive scenes.
# 5 Harry + Ginny
He saved her life a few times, and she’s had a crush on him since she was ten. Of course they were going to end up together.
# 4 Oz + Willow
Only my first of two favourite couples from this series. I love how when they were together Willow was just learning Wicca and was sort of the brains with computers. I love how Oz noticed Willow and not Buffy, it seemed like everyone Xander, Angel, Spike, etc. were all into Buffy but not Oz. He liked Willow’s geeky side, and subsequently, she didn’t mind his werewolf side.
# 3 Buffy + Angel
Probably one of the most iconic relationships and that’s because Buffy had to kill him at the end of season 2. Yes, that’s my favourite episode and if you forget it, basically Angel is Angelus, he has no soul, he’s going to unleash a demon that will suck the world into hell and Willow manages to give his soul back at the last minute when it’s already too late. Even though he’s Angel again, Buffy still has to kill him.
# 2 Sookie + Bill
From Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Mysteries comes these two. I know it’s not a perfect relationship, but they are madly in love with each other. Bill even faces daylight just to try to save her!
# 1 Grace and Sam
It should come as no surprise that my favorite couple comes from my favorite series Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, but really, this one is unique. His pack tried to kill her when she was eleven and he saved her, on foot. Six years later another happy accident has him naked and bleeding on her porch, and that begins an interesting relationship mostly had under bed sheets and in front of blasting radiators in the middle of winter.
I hope you liked my choices, and if you have any of your own post them here. Who is your favourite literary couple?
